Eight Steps to Install a Home Surveillance Camera

323 wordsFeikui News

Many users buy a camera and then have no idea how to install it — and for a one-camera home job, hiring a contractor is rarely worth it. Here are the eight steps.

Buy first: choose a reputable brand with reliable performance — good sensitivity, glare resistance, low distortion, compact size, long life. You will need: camera, a computer or NVR, shielded video cable and power cable.

The eight steps

  • 1. Choose the position. Based on the scene and coverage needs. Check anchors and screw sizes, conduit interfaces and cable runs before starting. Mounting height: at least 2.5 m indoors, 3.5 m outdoors.
  • 2. Mount the camera. Fit the lens per the model (integrated IR cameras skip this). Avoid touching the CCD/sensor. Power up and adjust aperture and focus via a test monitor.
  • 3. Fix the bracket. Drill and secure the bracket with anchors and screws; verify it is solid before mounting the camera in the agreed direction.
  • 4. Fit the housing (if any). Open the housing, secure the camera, place the power adapter inside, re-close and mount on the bracket.
  • 5. Terminate the BNC/aviation connector. Insert the soldered BNC plug firmly into the socket. Everything — lens, housing, bracket — must be secure and tamper-resistant.
  • 6. Connect power. Plug the adapter output into the camera's power jack firmly. In strong-EMI environments, insulate the camera from ground.
  • 7. Connect the video host. Run the other end of the cable to the NVR or monitor and secure it.
  • 8. Aim and adjust. Power everything on and set the camera angle via the monitor. Keep terminals stable and easy to operate; avoid direct light on monitors; ensure ventilation for equipment in cabinets.

Complete these eight steps and a simple surveillance system is done. If the image is noisy or missing, check the wiring first, then test the camera separately. For explosion-proof systems, always use professional installers — that is not a place to cut costs.
